Coffee, or buna in Amharic, is often seen as a tool. Something to wake you up in the morning or give you a boost in the middle of a long afternoon.
In Ethiopian and Eritrean culture, where buna was first discovered, it represents so much more than that. It’s an opportunity to bring family and friends together to share in a traditional coffee ceremony. During this ceremony the home is filled with the incredible aroma of freshly roasted buna beans. When it’s ready it’s poured into small porcelain cups without handles, called cini in Amharic, and distributed to all guests.
Guests share laughter and stories while enjoying snacks like colo, popcorn or bread with the buna.
It’s a great reminder to take a step back from the non-stop nature of life these days and spend time with the people that matter. Isn’t that what life is about?
